Spasmodic Dysphonia is a neurological voice disorder that involves "spasms" of the vocal cords.  SD is in the family of disorders called dystonia.
There are two primary types of SD.  ADductor SD is intermittent excessive closing of the vocal cords.  ABductor SD is a prolonged opening of the vocal cords resulting in a breathy whispering voice pattern.
It is estimated that approximately 50,000 people are affected in North America.  It usually starts in middle age and more women are affected.
